Practiced for centuries by cultures around the world. Detox diets are said to eliminate toxins from your body, improve health, and promote weight loss.
By removing and eliminating toxins, then feeding your body with healthy nutrients, detoxifying can help protect you from disease and renew your ability to maintain optimum health through a range of methods such as yoga or meditation.
Detoxification is done by removing impurities from the blood in the liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymphatic system, and skin. However, when these systems are compromised, impurities aren’t properly filtered and the body is adversely affected.
How would you know when it’s time for a detox?
- Unexplained fatigue
- Menstrual problems
- Sluggish elimination
- Low-grade infection
- Puffy eyes or bags under the eyes
- Mental confusion
- Irritated skin
There are many detoxification programs and detox recipes, depending on your individual needs.
Here are my favorite detox tips:
Start With a Healthy Breakfast
You would hear this all the time, but it’s true. Skipping breakfast can cause you to binge later, because you’re not getting enough energy to kick you off for the day.
Good options: A bowl of oatmeal sprinkled with cinnamon and unsalted nuts, Greek yogurt with berries, an apple topped with peanut butter, or a scrambled egg with beans or salmon and a slice of whole-wheat toast.
Load Up On The Right Liquids
Water flushes out your system by keeping your kidneys, liver, colon, and lymph nodes (organs that filter waste products from your body) running smoothly. Don’t over do yourself over guzzling a ton if you’re not thirsty, but try to drink about 1.5 liters to 2 liters a day, plus one to two cups of tea or coffee.
A good way to tell if you’re hydrated enough, You should be able to pee every couple of hours, and your urine should be fairly clear.
Limiting or abstaining entirely from alcohol is one of the best ways to keep your body’s detoxification system running strong.
Excessive drinking can severely damage your liver function by causing fat buildup, inflammation, and scarring. More than 90% of alcohol is metabolized by your liver.
Get Some Sleep
Ensuring you have adequate and proper sleep each night is a must to support your body’s health and natural detoxification system.
Poor sleep has been linked to short and long-term health issues, such as stress, heart disease, anxiety, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. You should try for seven to nine hours per night on a regular basis to promote good health .
Having plenty of sleep to improves the flow of cerebrospinal fluid to the brain. Your body cleanses itself while you are asleep, processing toxins and replenishing energy. They are essential for effective detoxing.
When it comes to diet, you don’t need any kind of a crazy detox plan to feel better. A colorful variety of fruits and veggies should be the main focus of your diet, along with whole grains, beans and legumes, and small amounts of nuts and seeds.
Avoid processed foods, while eating less meat, dairy, and sugary foods. This will give your digestive system a well-earned break.
Try this for lunch, whip up a green smoothie in your blender. It’s much more nutritious than green juice, because you’re still getting fiber. Throw in a few vegetables like kale, spinach, broccoli, carrotes etc, Perhaps a couple of spices or herbs like fresh ginger, parsley, basil, cinnamon or nutmeg. Protein such as whey, plain yogurt, soy milk, egg white. This combo will deliver all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants you need.
Time for a snack
When that late afternoon cravings kick in, opt for air-popped popcorn, unsalted nuts, fruit, or a tiny piece of chocolate if you have a sweet tooth.
Make regular eating a habit by keeping your fridge and pantry stocked with healthy fixings like yogurt, peanut butter, and whole wheat bread or wraps for quick and easy meals.
Stay on the move
Regular exercise is a form of healthy detox as it encourages circulation in the blood and lymph system. Following that will also enhance digestion, reduce tension, lubricate joints, and strengthen your body.
Sweat in a sauna so your body can eliminate waste through perspiration.
Regular exercise lowers inflammation and allows your body’s detoxification system to work the way it should be.
Detoxing is most essential when trying to lose weight, feel less bloated or feel less sluggish during the day
You can enhance your body’s natural detoxification system and improve your overall health by staying hydrated, consuming less salt, getting active, and following an antioxidant-rich diet.
